If progress is inevitable why is sporting tradition so critical to policy decisions?

Sports are part of a continually unfolding story. Unlike other forms of entertainment, the story not only is written as it being performed but also exists in a historic context. Part of the appeal of baseball is its link to the pastoral ideal. A day at the ballpark connects us because of the crack of the bat, the green of the grass, the pace of the game. The baseball story continually unfolds as previous records are compared to current successes. If major league baseball were to allow composite bats or bats that performed differently than wood, what would happen to sound of the game? What would happen to the statistics, the early chapters of the baseball story? Technology policy is developed to balance the sport.
